Introduction to FERPA

Welcome to the College of Education's Introduction to the Family Educational Records and Privacy Act (FERPA) learning module. This website provides an overview of important FERPA policies and regulations and also provides a short assessment to test and demonstrate your understanding of the key principles of FERPA. Upon completing the quiz with a perfect score, you will gain access to a certificate of completion that you can submit to a dropbox in a course you are taking here at the University.

To learn about FERPA, test your understanding, and gain a certification of completion through this site, we recommend you:

  1. Review all sections in FERPA Overview
  2. Review all sections in Key Federal Laws
  3. Take the FERPA Quiz as many times as needed to get a perfect score. Note: You must be logged in to take the quiz.

Upon completion, you will be able to:

  1. Explain basic concepts of privacy and their underlying assumptions
  2. Define key terms relevant to FERPA and privacy laws
  3. Describe federal laws that are primarily concerned with protecting the privacy of student education records
  4. Describe specific aspects of student records that are governed by current federal laws and regulations
